The M4A1 is an assault rifle predominantly manufactered by Colt Firearms. It has origins stemming back to the Armalite AR-15 rifle.

HistoryEdit

The M4A1 was first produced in 1984 by Colt Firearms, however it was never widely produced until 1994. The inspiration of the M4A1 rifle was probably the XM177E2, an experimental carbine version of the M16 used in the Vietnam War, which later became the CAR-15. Many M16 carbines were trialed since then, leading up to the design and eventually production of the M4A1.

The first M4 rifles were burst-fire only, and were little more than carbine versions of the M16A2. This model is commonly reffered to as the 'M4 Carbine'. Later, around the late 90's, the M4A1 was produced. The M4A1 improved on the M4 Carbine by replacing the burst-fire mode with a fully-automatic mode instead. The M4A1 has since been in service with many military forces, and is most well-known for being in use with certain braches of the US Army.
